They talk about a few causes, but this is the gist of it for anyone who doesn’t want to click:
Researchers cited the pandemic as the biggest factor in the widening gender gap; it took a heavier toll on men. Unintentional injuries and poisonings (mostly drug overdoses), accidents and suicide were other contributors.
To your 2nd point: in pretty much all drug abuse/addiction, men are more likely to abuse or become dependent, and they tend to use higher amounts on average.
It’s likely a combination of things, but two of the biggest are:
Men on average isolate more, keep smaller (sometimes non-existent) social circles, and are less likely to reach out to others for support when they do have friends/family. Isolation is highly correlated with substance abuse of all kinds.
Men are on average the higher risk takers. Be it nature or nurture, men disproportionately push safety boundaries for just about anything humans do, which results in high usage of drugs, higher overdose deaths, higher rates of severe accidents, etc.
If you where to try and explain the Fediverse to someone, how would you explain it with it's different instances? As well as explain why it is better in some ways for the future of the Internet?
I noticed that kbin has stalled in development recently and the ongoing problems with federation etc. made me use it even less for the past few weeks. I even spent more time on reddit than here....
In another thread, I read a user’s comment about how the lemmy experience has got progressively worse over the past few months, with a lot more trash content making it to their front page....
I even like finding similar communities being scattered around the fediverse. Not being centrally owned by anyone (including a single instance) is what makes this different from reddit.
I think it’s probably the #1 hardest thing to adjust to for new people joining Lemmy. That said, I also think it’s a good thing to not have all of our eggs in one basket. Like, if we have 4 communities about classic cars, and one starts making weird moderation decisions, users don’t have to leave Lemmy altogether.
Since my favorite reddit app came to Lemmy I’m really keen on getting more people into the fediverse to pump up the volume of content around here. Are there any initiatives that we can assist to get folks onboard?...
It’s the reason I’ve been motivated to post as much as I do, both in broader communities and a handful of niche ones that I want to see grow.
If you’ve thought about posting/commenting but just haven’t yet, take the plunge! I never used to post on reddit at all, and I’ve been pretty active since joining Lemmy.
I created the XCOM community on lemmy.world, but I haven’t had to mod a single thing yet, because it’s slow (only 300-something subscribers, and mostly me posting).
I might look into it. The only catch is that I’m usually just checking lemmy on my phone, and I haven’t looked into how many apps have the ability to mod stuff.
I’ll hop into inactive communities for things that interest me, and after posting for a bit, others eventually show up and start commenting/posting too.
