I don't mind waiting in line, but I refuse to use self-checkout. It's just an excuse for companies to not hire cashiers and make more profit.

I don't know if this is a trauma thing, or an autism thing, but as I've gotten older (and it's harder to pretend) tears are a lot closer to the surface than they used to be. Sad tears, happy tears, overwhelmed tears. They just pop up, out of nowhere, and I'm left with red eyes and a runny nose.

A thing that comes up because of last night...
Anyone else in here have lucid dreams? You know you're dreaming, and you can either change the dream, or wake yourself up? I get nightmares fairly often, but most of the time I tell myself (in the dream) that I'm dreaming and change it. If it won't change, I can wake myself up. I've read it isn't common generally, but is it maybe more common with autism?

First for me: What does this mean? How does this affect my life going forward?
The answer I've decided on: It means nothing, by itself, it's just another piece of information about me. And going forward it can mean as much or as little as I choose. It's all about what I want to do with it.

The first time I had a gout flare-up I didn't know what it was, so I just let it go for a couple of weeks, until I couldn't take it anymore. The doctor was surprised I waited, lectured me that I could have caused permanent join damage by waiting, then told me what to do if it ever happened again. A little pill I have to take. Fortunately it's only happened once after that. I researched what not to eat.

I'm totally in my element, and hubs is feeling railroaded. Another day in my life.
We've talked about an EV for months, we've looked, I knew what he likes. So I bought him one last week. Yesterday I got the plug installed and ordered the charger for the garage - delivered tomorrow. This morning I told him I need the details on the power rate plan we're on; what rates are charged at which time of day.

1/2

ScottSoCal,
@ScottSoCal@computerfairi.es avatar

@actuallyautistic

He had a meltdown. First the car, then the charger, and now I'm pushing him to get the rate information. Why didn't I involve him in any of this?
Because he agonizes, and can't make a decision. He drags it out until forced into a decision by timing, and then he grumbles about it when he makes the decision I knew he was going to make all along. Let's skip all that and just get to the end.
Hubs is not happy. But he likes the car I bought him.

2/2

ScottSoCal,
@ScottSoCal@computerfairi.es avatar

@jeanoappleseed @actuallyautistic

Surprising hubs is an astoundingly difficult thing to do, but this did. Despite me telling him we need to get him into an EV before me (my car gets 10+ higher mpg than his) and that I'd gotten pre-approved for financing with a 30 day deadline to buy, and that we were looking at cars for him. When I actually did it, he was surprised. I saw the car, the price, model, color all worked, and I did it. Much to his displeasure.

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic

I announced, he decided not to hear.

I'm in my element because this is about specifications and operation and mechanical/electronic things. He goes by subjective reviews and impressions.
[shrug] The math worked.

ScottSoCal,
@ScottSoCal@computerfairi.es avatar

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic

He looks for subtext and hidden meaning (and what he'd do if our positions were reversed), and decides that's what I actually meant. He's done this for 31 years.
What I actually meant is what I said. If I'd meant something else, I'd have said something else. He has trouble with that concept.

ScottSoCal,
@ScottSoCal@computerfairi.es avatar

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic

Hubs and I have a complicated relationship, for historical reasons. I think he anticipates me taking some decisive action (like divorce) that I don't plan to take. The car confuses and upsets him because if our positions were reversed, he wouldn't have done it, and he doesn't understand why I did.
I did it because it's the rational thing to do, it benefits both of us.

ScottSoCal,
@ScottSoCal@computerfairi.es avatar

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @actuallyautistic

Now you're trying to read subtext into what I'm saying. And you're doing it with what you already know is a small subset of all the data. I'm not sure how that's productive.

After seeing this graphic on social media, I thought it would be good to create a corresponding graphic that centers the perspective of a person with some of these (admittedly stereotypical) presentations of autism and problematizes NT behaviors and attitudes. Below is a draft list of these presentations of neurotypicality from an autistic perspective. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for changes.

A customer sent an email with questions about a current contract. The Systems Engineer sent out a meeting invite for next week, to "get on the same page", then forwarded us the email. It was basic stuff, just needed answers. I answered, customer is happy. SE canceled the meeting.

A used VW is not for people with no extra energy to spare. Stereotypical run-around at the dealership.
It's a 2022 VW ID.4 EV, with app connectivity. An app I can't use when the car says the original buyer still owns it. VW can't - won't - help. They suggested I contact the original buyer and ask nicely if she'll unregister the car. I'm guessing it's a repo, and I don't want to do that.

If you ever decide to go in that direction, do some extra study in electronics at cryogenic temperatures (resistors and capacitors get funky when things get really cold) and how they respond to high radiation environments. It seems like it's just getting a (fairly subjective) stamp of approval.
