I like to ask a variety of questions, sometimes silly, serious, and/or strange. Never asking in an attempt to pester or “just asking questions” stuff.

I’m generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of folks’ views.

ALostInquirer,

Any particular boots you might recommend? I tried going this route but apparently should have researched more as the ones I got didn’t really hold up that well.

ALostInquirer,

Ah, yeah, I find I need some more padding in my shoes to feel comfortable, but appreciate the reply all the same!

I’ve tried on some without much and was pretty sure my feet would feel like trash within a few short hours standing and walking. Think I spoiled myself with some shoes with gel insoles.

For those active across the fediverse, who are some creatives you follow and which creative communities do you enjoy? (kopnij.in) en

Creatives of whichever fields, whether writers, artists, musicians, meme-makers, developers, film makers, and the like and/or communities, I’m curious to know about some of the people around the fediverse creating some original stuff....

ALostInquirer,

Suppose while being anything other than human?

ALostInquirer,

Ah, that reminds me of some similar puzzle/kits made of metal! I’m forgetting the name for the specific one right now, but there appear to be a few different companies behind them from trying to search & find the one I was thinking of.

ALostInquirer,

That was the one showing at the top of my searches, but there was another company I was thinking of that I can’t recall nor find now.

ALostInquirer,

Is Satya Nadella with you?

ALostInquirer,

What is FPV short for? I’d guess given the RC mention (remote control?) that it may be first-person view?

ALostInquirer,

which is an okay protocol once you lock down the software implementation.

What do you mean by this? Adjusting settings and something more…?

ALostInquirer,

Someone better versed in Lemmy may correct me, but isn’t comment activity more of a factor with some of the sorting algorithms (e.g. Hot/Active) here? In which case your upvotes may help but your comment may be even better!

ALostInquirer,

What is a SME or SMB in this context? Mentioning @oce in case you’re not sure what they meant by SMB either.

ALostInquirer,

Thanks!

ALostInquirer,

Thanks!

ALostInquirer,

Yeah, I mean, we all know it’s to keep the chips in suspended animation until the bag is opened and their lives concluded for snacks, right?

ALostInquirer,

You’re aware of the EFF, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, right? It’s one of I’m sure several groups that organizes & strives to push back against malicious action from tech companies, as well as over-encroachment from governments (at times itself coming from tech company lobbying). It’s based in the United States though, if memory serves, so others may want to chip in and mention similar groups for their region/nation.

At the same time, services/platforms that don’t rely on ads pretty much always welcome donations, e.g. Wikipedia, Internet Archive, Gutenberg, as well your resident Fediverse sites, so also keep those in mind.

ALostInquirer,

Eventually I can see getting rid of them, but for now they’re keeping Lemmy active.

Do a multitude of automated posts without comments and conversation really count as activity? Before I simply hid bot posts via settings, I’d rarely see any conversations appearing on Reddit reposts. Even now if you look at probably the most prolific bot instance/account behind this, Lemmit.online bot, you can see this for yourself.

Interesting archival project, I suppose, but it certainly doesn’t seem to generate activity in terms of conversation, besides posts like this.

ALostInquirer,

My high school had access to a couple of the major academic publication databases, so we definitely learned the fundamentals.

Was this a public high school? I ask as I know many academic publication databases tend to have notorious costs associated with them, albeit maybe they’re more relaxed than I had realized for schools.

ALostInquirer,

But as someone who has gone on to do actual research at an academic level, I’d say the essential challenge of the task wasn’t even touched. Which is getting to the bottom of a question or field, exploring the material on said topic and then digesting and synthesising all of that. Some may hit this in undergrad depending on the degree, and it’s tricky work to do well and at an advanced level.

From what I’ve seen, the ideas and techniques required aren’t covered early on at all. Now it may be rather challenging at an early educational level, but I’d bet you it’s possible but undesirable because it’s hard to grade and takes a long time.

Without having gone on to do actual research, but with at least undergrad completed, I’m inclined to agree. Despite having completed undergrad, even it left me wondering a fair amount how much I’d just been a terrible student or how much my education had somehow managed to sort of gloss over or speed over rather critical research skills to develop.

Sure, I knew how to search for info and kind of weigh the sources, as some others have noted, but the more involved work like you describe? Not so much, and I’m fairly confident it was as much to do with the curriculum as it was to do with the limited time each class/course had to work with (plus accounting for the fact you’d also be muddling through multiple other classes/courses), which wouldn’t necessarily even permit for assignments that would have one digging in and really researching thoroughly.

ALostInquirer,

What is college? Is it employed for middle school or high school? If so then no.

It’s for post-high school education, also referred to as higher education in my area. Generally they’re synonymous with universities in that respect where I’m from, and while I’m sure there may be some slight difference between the two (probably more distinct in other areas), I don’t know what they are exactly.

ALostInquirer,

Thanks for the book suggestion! I checked and it’s available via my library, so I may have to give it a read sometime!

ALostInquirer,

Have you heard of Bookshop? For physical books they seem a decent option, albeit their reach is limited at the moment to the US, UK, and Spain.

Outside of that, and suggesting folks check their libraries, I’ve nothing else to add to your good suggestions.

ALostInquirer,

If I saw that, I’d have to ask at least one of them, why? Such an odd choice given that’s not its main use case, but I’m guessing the answers would be something along the lines of, “Why not?” & “It’s what my friends are on.”

ALostInquirer,

I agree that you shouldn’t force anyone in to a solution they don’t want to use

Yeah…Person you’re replying to is saying, “Cope and be normal?” but also: the others are essentially trying to force/peer pressure OP/source of the image into a solution they don’t want to use. How is it that pushing people to do/use whatever’s “normal” is so acceptable compared to asking them to meet on more comfortable terms?

ALostInquirer,

Not that I use it or am fond of it, but wouldn’t Telegram be more of a middle ground in this context?

It’s not big corporate (Meta), nor smaller nonprofit or decentralized/self-hosted (Signal/Matrix~Element), and is a business offering a messaging app with encryption options one may enable as desired.

ALostInquirer,

Out of curiosity, have the battery lives improved from older RC vehicles? I’ve looked at some current models and it still seems like they run only a short time, but I’ve not followed RC stuff closely enough to know if they’ve really gotten much better and I’m lacking the context.

ALostInquirer,

Thanks for the reply and insight! I suspect some of the models I was looking at may have had some lower capacity batteries to try to balance out the costs, and I was overlooking that.

What film, show or game that is not necessarily 'underated' didn't have the level of social impact it deserved. (kopnij.in) en

What’s the antithesis of Arrested Development, Firefly or The Big Lebowski? Those may never have ‘found their audience’ but over time seemed to recognised by everyone. What are the deep cuts that you liked but it feels like everyone has completely forgotten they even existed.

ALostInquirer,

Any insight into why in the world they’d greenlight Jericho to begin with if they seemed so uninterested in supporting it? It’s certainly not the first show to run into a situation like that, but it’s always kind of interesting to see how the reasoning may vary across businesses with each show.

ALostInquirer,

There’s the porn, and then there’s some bot instances, right? And then there’s the pornbots that bring you a little mix of both.

Maybe it’s a lesser issue on world, but on some other instances I’ve found that bot instances are arguably worse than porn by sheer volume of posts, but they can be pretty close.

If you were asked to think of something you never thought of before, what would be the most reliable way to do it? (kopnij.in)

When I read about how most of our thoughts are repetitive, I wondered if it would be possible for us to have a thought that is completely new or original by will. Is there some way we can have unique thoughts whenever we wish to?...

ALostInquirer,

Also you should ideally be able to think of something new completely by your own, without relying on external factors like taking inspiration from your surroundings or words from a recent/ongoing conversations, looking at the content open in your device etc.

If it could be expressed in existing ways, would it still count as entirely new or unthought of?

ALostInquirer,

Not necessarily, note that I wrote, “expressed in existing ways” and not, “spoken/written in existing ways”. Expression itself has a greater breadth than language alone, e.g. movement, drawing/painting, instrumental music arrangements, etc.

It includes language, absolutely, but it is not limited to language, which makes for a more challenging question imo. If not expressed in existing ways, it would meet the criteria of entirely new and unthought of, presumably, but it would also likely fail to be recognized as an expression at all.

ALostInquirer,

Sort of a paradox, isn’t it? The folks that want the information will complain about having to talk to someone despite being provided info, yet they won’t read for the information they’ve requested.

Do they want the information, or do they want a baseless basis of complaint? The world may never know.

ALostInquirer,

Hmm, would you happen to have suggestions for smaller containers to use to make caches? I’ve read of like ammo boxes being decent, but that always struck me as working best for more remote spots, or maybe I’ve overestimated their sizes a bit.

(Also this is how I found that there aren’t many geocaching communities across instances to ask this in, lol)

ALostInquirer,

Isn’t it more unethical to abide unjust laws?

ALostInquirer,

I recognize what’s legal and not. It’s part of being in a society.

As is recognizing what’s ethical and not, is it not?

ALostInquirer,

Out of curiosity, is this linked to a PC running a Linux distro, or Windows/MacOS?

Edit:
To clarify, I meant this as, “Are you using this with a PC running Linux?” vs. whether it was available across different OSes. Sorry for the confusion, but thanks for the replies that address both interests!

ALostInquirer,

Thanks! I was asking as I’ve heard of some jank with the Windows app (which, kind of to be expected given it’s having to adjust to a different OS), and I think there is a MacOS version too, but haven’t read as much about it & its quality.

ALostInquirer,

Isn’t this where Mastodon.world kind of comes into play? Off Lemmy but still a federated service, can even pop whatever LemmyWorld status account there in to one’s RSS readers or whatever.
