Facebook Watches Teens Online As They Prep for College (themarkup.org)

An investigation by the media organization The Markup found the pixel by Facebook and Instagram-parent Meta on dozens of popular websites targeting kids from kindergarten to college, including sites that students are all but required to use if they want to participate in school activities or apply to college....

This reminds me of that scene from Winter Soldier (excellent movie and it gets more relevant every year)

Jasper Sitwell: Zola’s algorithm is a program…for choosing Insight’s targets

Steve Rogers: What targets?

Jasper Sitwell: You! A TV anchor in Cairo, the Undersecretary of Defense, a high school valedictorian in Iowa city. Bruce Banner, Stephen Strange, anyone who’s a threat to HYDRA! Now, or in the future.

Steve Rogers: The Future? How could it know? [Sitwell laughs]

Jasper Sitwell: How could it not? The 21st century is a digital book. Zola taught HYDRA how to read it. Your bank records, medical histories, voting patterns, e-mails, phone calls, your damn SAT scores. Zola’s algorithm evaluates people’s past to predict their future.

Steve Rogers: And what then?

Jasper Sitwell: Oh, my God. Pierce is gonna kill me.

Steve Rogers: What then?!

Jasper Sitwell: Then the Insight Helicarriers scratch people off the list. A few million at a time.

It’s one of my favourites for sure

I loved the one big scene in Endgame, but all of Winter Soldier was great

Sounds like a really spammy and annoying way to promote an app. I assume someone else who has your phone number signed up on their app and gave access to all their contacts. Then the app sends out spam texts to get you to sign up.

Depending on where you are located, you might be able to report it. Otherwise just drop them a bad review, or name and shame them here

edit, I assume it’s this: slickapp.co

Canadian geese, Australian Emus, sounds like there’s some interesting AI image ideas here

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

they really don’t seem like they want to exist

Alternatively, they’re at peace and content with their existence. At least that’s what it seems like to me, goals really

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh noo, I love them both :(

I got distracted by the wrong aspect of that comment lol

I was picturing Canadian Geese and Australian Emus working together on… providing aid or something. Maybe not waging war

A solution could be to have it run on request. Reddit doesn’t even have that, it could be a cool new tool

Run an open source translation engine, and have a 'translate to account language’s button. It could do one of

  • run locally on your machine (like Firefox’s translations), you have to redo it if you load the page again. Doesn’t need any server reconfiguration
  • runs on the server, and the result is cached. Anyone looking for that language for that comment in the future can get it instantly
  • runs on all content on the server, for a preset selection of languages. Might be more efficient in the long run
otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Fair enough, maybe a checkbox section in the settings for which languages to list?

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m not familiar with how I’d set that up. I usually find an existing RSS feed and follow it

edit: haven’t used Google Alerts in a while. Looks like you can have it send an email without tying it to your account. That should work fine

The Decline of Niche Communities on Lemmy (kopnij.in) en

I’ve been using Lemmy for a couple years now, and unfortunately I’ve noticed a significant decline in the niche communities that were originally active. When I first joined I saw much more variety when browsing the All feed. But over time, the communities I liked have faded as shitposting and meme communities have come to...

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Yea some of the communities I’m helping with just didn’t exist before we spun them up in the past few months. They’re new and fairly niche

There are other niche communities that I’m curious about and would like to see more from, but I don’t have experience in those areas to know what’s interesting/ relevant. I post what I can, but there are probably others that can do it better

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

I agree there is more discussion on Reddit

Some of the Lemmy communities need some promo too. Maybe the few people subscribed don’t use those accounts anymore

Over time as you post more stuff, people subscribe from ALL or from the crossposted communities. You can also promote the community by talking about it in tangently related posts, or [email protected] type places

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s getting worse too. Recently I’ve noticed Reddit links from friends looking like:

reddit.com/r/example/s/1234567

Which then redirects to the actual reddit.com/r/example/post/comments/1938473

I believe Spotify and Tiktok do short tracker-filled links like that too. If you’re on android, URLCheck can wrangle those links to find the actual content without the trackers. I’ve set it to intercept all clicked links so I can modify as needed.

On web / iOS, I’m not sure

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve been meaning to look into how the URL expansion works. If it happened on the device then I guess it doesn’t help much, but if it happens elsewhere it might fix the tracking?

It might also limit how much identifying information is attached to it. If the original link opens in my app, then they can tie accounts together. If it’s wrangled by a third party app, then I open the clean link, they just get my IP address

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Is there a reason why that water can’t be reused?

I always assumed it was for cooling

For those active across the fediverse, who are some creatives you follow and which creative communities do you enjoy? (kopnij.in) en

Creatives of whichever fields, whether writers, artists, musicians, meme-makers, developers, film makers, and the like and/or communities, I’m curious to know about some of the people around the fediverse creating some original stuff....

I’d love to follow more of them :)

Some communities like [email protected]

Photography: I follow a few on Pixelfed, I find them through the explore feed with styles that I like.

The biggest thing for me right now is backups

I can’t comfortably recommend it to people that will lose access if they lose their phones / upgrade without following the process perfectly

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

The process is a bit involved on mobile. Setting up a backup location, using a third party app to sync updates and deletions etc. It could be simplified by integrating with common cloud storage services (the encrypted file)

Also iOS doesn’t have backups at all last I checked. If you lose your phone the messages are toast

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Well sure, but encrypted backups are still secure. What’s not secure (or private rather) is someone realizing they can’t have a backup of important chats and going back to Facebook Messenger.

Backups are a thing on Android, and they’re planned for iOS. It just hasn’t happened yet. People can choose what they want to backup and when they want disappearing messages turned on.

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Yea that’s a bad title

Offshoot

Was it initially a spin off or something?

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

In terms of health, it doesn’t matter I don’t think. You’re not going to be deficient in an important nutrient by going a day from eating it (but weeks or months is another story)

So I think if you don’t want to eat them at the same time, you could just eat more of each on alternating days?

Unless I misunderstood the question

It makes me happy to hear that :)

Also, I love seeing posts from [email protected], I’ve forwarded a few posts from there to friends that knit

@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s cool to hear!

Would you be able to share more on the safety related stuff that came up? I’m curious mostly

I’ll check out the other thread :)

What Lemmy communities would you like to share that we may not know about? (kopnij.in) en

I’m noticing an influx of Reddit users today, maybe revolving around their weird bug they had today. I know this question pops up semi regularly, but for those just getting their foot in the door maybe we can help show them what else is out here on the Fediverse to help them get started....

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Other communities to subscribe to for more of this

[email protected] (for new users to ask any questions, including communities)

[email protected] (same purpose as this post)

[email protected] (for brand new communities as they’re made)

Edit: oops you already linked some of this, thanks for making the post!

otter,

I think that would be a security nightmare, so they probably won’t (and they’ll probably be forced to not do it if they try)

How safe are grammar editing tools? (kopnij.in) en

Without naming names, there’s a well advertised grammar editing tool that’s available either as an app download or browser extension. This is something I’d value for a number of reasons (good grammar is important!) but I’m super cautious about anything I’m giving permission to watch what I’m typing....

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

This one is recommended by Mozilla

addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/…/languagetool/

It DOES still need to send data somewhere to check

Your privacy is important to us: By default, this extension will check your text by sending it to languagetool.org over a securely encrypted connection. No account is needed to use this extension. We don’t store your IP address. See languagetool.org/privacy/ for our privacy policy.

I don’t want to confirm details I don’t know, so someone else should probably explain more on if this is good/bad

It is interesting to see what ads play during certain content… (kopnij.in)

I know there is usually a “target demographic” that is profiled for what kind of products that they may buy. I was listening to an electro swing mix online and I kept hearing ads for different kinds of soaps, and all I could think of is “damn, a lot of people must clean while listening to this.

Does alien.top do anything other than mirror reddit comments? (kopnij.in)

I have just realised that alien.top seems to be mirroring reddit accounts, posts and comments, without labelling them as such. What is the point of this one way mirroring? As soon as users realise, they are going to just leave. There is no point having a discussion with a bot that cannot respond.

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh wow that’s cool, I was wondering how this would be different from Lemmit. Really cool

How does 2 way mirroring work? How are you planning to fund / keep the instance stable?

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Sounds cool, looking forward to seeing it in action

otter,

Not worried about calories (if anything, more might be better…)

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Which brand / type do you get?

otter,
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

This is really cool, I was looking for an alternative to things like Calm

I think it should get reviewed and listed on Mozilla’s PrivacyNotIncluded page for mental health apps. That’s where I checked, and I imagine others do as well.

I’ll try submitting it later unless someone else gets to it first :)
